There are cardinal changes in Windows 7 against Vista - full disk automatic backup available for purchasers
of all Windows editions. In Windows Vista, only users of the Professional, Ultimate, and Enterprise editions
can do automatic backup of whole disk, including OS and data. Users of Home and Starter editions of Vista have

Windows Backup allows to choose an internal hard drive, an external hard drive, a CD/DVD,
and an external flash drive.
Flash drive is the most expensive solution. But it has compact size and durability against mechanical shock.
Flash drive is the best solution for everyday valuable data saving and transportation to another room or building.
Functionality of Windows Backup and Restore allow to restore a file, which was deleted or damaged.
But Windows 7 Backup and Restore has some limitations:
1) Automatic backup feature does not create customized schedule.
In some cases, backup task must be executed several times per day, for example one time per hour.
Windows 7 Backup and Restore has not enough flexibility of scheduler for this request.
2) Windows 7 Backup and Restore is not stable in compare with specialized software.
One error can break backup task, and it will do no backup archive at all.
3) Backup archives writes in proprietary format, which can be changed and restoration from previous archives
will be impossible.
For stable work and advanced configuration, it is recommended to use professional backup software.
